With its graceful sea-inspired shape, the Sydney Opera House is among the finest architectural achievements in history. Built along the promontory of Bennelong Point, near Sydney Harbor, it is the pride of Australians everywhere. The building’s design, created by Danish architect Joern Utzon, is in perfect harmony with its artistic purpose. Both innovative and romantic in style, it was selected from more than 220 submissions. Construction began in 1959 and proceeded until 1973. The roof proved the longest and most arduous task, although the final result is breathtaking.

The building, with is concrete shells rising 67 meters (220 feet) quickly became Sydney’s most popular tourist attraction. The site, which welcomes more than two million visitors annually, hosts a rich selection of operas, music concerts, ballets, plays and films. In March 1999, a fifth performance hall was added to the four original ones. The main concert hall is equipped with the world’s largest mechanical tracker action organ, which houses 10,500 pipes. The organ alone required 10 years to complete. Under the stage, 18 adjustable polymer rings help deliver unparallel sound quality. All of these elements combine to provide visitors with a truly memorable experience.
