The vault of the Sistine Chapel constitutes one of the most
beautiful achievements in the history of art. In 1508,
Michelangelo
began creating this immense fresco that measures 5,595 sq. ft.
This
painstaking task took him four years to complete. Alone, he
painted
laying down on scaffolding 53 ft. above the ground. This
masterpiece
has nine central panels that illustrate the creation of Heaven
and
earth, the original sin and the story of Noah.
Twenty-three years later, Michelangelo created vet another stunning piece for the chapel. This enormous fresco titled Last Judgment decorates the wall in back of the altar. This circular painting measures 46 ft. long by 40 ft. wide and depicts the journey of the human soul to either heaven or hell. Michelangelo was in his sixties when he created this huge mural that took him another four years to complete.
