On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set out to sea in search of a new passage to India. He headed a flotilla of three ships. There were 20 to 30 crewmen on the Nina and the Pinta, and about 40 on the Santa Maria. It took the expedition 10 weeks to cross the Atlantic. Columbus landed in America believing he was in China. He never knew that he had discovered a new continent.

Christopher Columbus' flagship, the Santa Maria, was the largest and slowest of the flotilla. This massive ship was about 82 feet long by 26 feet wide and was equipped with a huge hold that could contain up to 132 US tons of cargo. It was very stable and seaworthy. With its three big, square sails flying in the wind, it was at the time, the ideal ship for making lengthy voyages.
